Venus in Scorpio is an experiment in Northern California Soul. A smoldering constellation of fun and intoxicatingly provocative rhythms designed to uplift people from the weight of their burdens and transform the holes of superstition into a jubilant, swirling celebration of love and life.
“We’re paving the way for people to recognize and to participate in their own ‘soulvation’,” smiles lead vocalist, Kegan Stedwell. “What could be more exciting and juicier than that?”
The musical soul of Venus embodies a high-energy, hip-swinging and sweat-dripping good time. Paying tribute to the grooviest elements of funk, dance, gospel, reggae, ska, Motown, psychedelic and neo-soul, and acid jazz, the band instinctively pushes boundaries and, at times, joyously flirts with the unknown. Venus in Scorpio is the party you want to be at.
This air of musical unpredictably fronted with the call and response of two dynamic female vocalists brings a lush, wise and powerful counterpoint that shimmers as much as it shines. Make no doubt about it, the alchemy that Venus conjures is intentionally raw yet intimate, and pulsates with some wickedly delicious fun.
Situated along a fault line between the western edge of California’s jagged north coast and soft rolling hills to the east, the home of Venus in Scorpio is an alluring mix of opposing forces. Beneath neon colored skies, the area embraces a vulnerable yet rugged beauty that is as wildly diverse as the band members who make it their home.
What began as a dream for Stedwell to work with each of the fiery musicians she assembled for Venus in Scorpio took three years. Individually, the members are long-time friends with decades of experience honing their musical identities. Each has mastered an eclectic array of genres having played in a variety notable Bay Area bands including afrobeat legends, Albino, and ska favorites, Soul Ska. Collectively, their unique sense of camaraderie and rich musical diversity blends seamlessly together in an unrivaled live experience. As with all Venus shows, both the band and the audience ride the edge of a sonic pulse that not only releases every concern and inhibition from the room, but somehow manages to recharge and restore the feelings of love and connection most find missing in today’s divided world.
Having recently opened for Angelo Moore and the Brand New Step (Moore is best known as lead singer and saxophonist for the Los Angeles based ska and funk metal band Fishbone), the chart for Venus in Scorpio is moving confidently from a supporting act to headlining a mix of festivals, clubs and private events throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
A sexy, magnetic, deliciously irresistible intimate encounter. A healing and transformative bonding experience. With pleasure as its guiding star, Venus in Scorpio is a seductive powerhouse who elicits all of this … and more.
